With all software type programs, their is never a final version, it is always being upgraded, updated or new features being added.
Think about your vBulletin software, it is constantly being updated with new features, and bug fixes.
To imply this is not a serious company is way off base. You can look through this forum, and at vBulletin.org and see the support and caring that goes into supporting all the mods that DBT offers. Just because a mod has a bug or does not have a feature you want, or works exactly like you would like to see it work does in no way mean it is incomplete.
DBT offers the lite version of the mods for users to test, then they can continue to use the lite version, or upgrade to the pro version if they so choose. DBT in no way forces you to use the pro versions.
If their is similar mods that are free, why would anyone purchase the same mod, because of the support that is given, and the hours of work that go into keeping up with bugs, and keeping up with vBulletin constantly changing. That is why alot of the free mods fall to the wayside, they simply can not provde the support for the products they release.
