Can you make sure you have GD enabled? That's the first thing that comes to mind

You shouldn't need to reinstall the gallery. I'm not sure what is causing the error though. Are you getting any web server errors in the log that might help? I might need a temp admin and ftp access to troubleshoot this more.
 
I don't see an upload tmp directory in the php settings? It might be crashing because it doesn't know where to upload the files to.
 
Something is still going on with your server, not sure what now though. I run a version check on GD so I know what functions I can use, it's crashing on the gd_info() version check. I'm going to change the next version to not use that and do it a different way which should bypass that problem. For now, it's working with the GD version hardcoded in your script.
 
Took me a bit to figure it out as well, had to go line by line echoing out code to find the problem, glad it's working now though :)
