In the shoutbox I get: * Hornstar has reached 2800 shouts!* @ [04:11 PM]
Only last night it said I was up to about 2500.
Every time I log in I have easily another 50 added on.

This is annoying as I have not even made more than 5 shouts lol

I am guessing it is logging some other kind of action (most probably the pm notice), however I have disabled the pm notification in the shoutbox for my account from the settings page the other day, but it seems to be still recording it.

Unfortunately without a clear method of reproducing this, I have no chance of explaining or fixing it :(

Do you have some sort of mod that makes news posts or some such as your name perhaps? If you have the "Hornstar made a post" notifications enabled in the shoutbox then those will be counted as shouts for you.

nope, I have that disabled too.

If you PM me with an FTP and AdminCP account I can look into it just to make sure it's not miscounting something somewhere :)

I have just confirmed it is indeed the PM notification causing the problem. I have disabled this option on my account like I said, however when I went into the archive it is not disabled in there.

Hiding the notification doesn't prevent it from being generated - after all, what would your recipient who does want it say if he stopped receiving them because you didn't want to see them? ;)

I suggest you set up a new "bot" account and use that for automated PMs :)

That does not make sense. I don't want to see my private messages show up in the shoutbox/archive. Why can't I disable it properly? Also I only want shouts to be recorded as shouts. I don't want to tag 100 000+ people and then have it say I have made 100 000 shouts lol

Also the whole private message thing in the shoutbox is weird. I see: I just sent you a forum PM: Welcome to Gamerz Needs - For All Your Gaming Needs! I click on the link, and it takes me to their pm and I get error: Invalid Private Message specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator Not sure why I want to see a message in my shoutbox about a pm that has been sent to another user. It serves me no purpose.

Okay let me explain:

When you (or the system, acting as you) sends a Private Message to a member, the Shoutbox sends a "Shoutbox Private Message" to the person in question. The link is the link he must click on in order to open the PM. That is why the link does not work for you.

Now the reason why we have this system is because if someone is viewing / chatting in the SB and receive a PM, they would not notice it until they refreshed the forum (unless they had vBNotifications installed, that is).

You can't "disable it properly" because that would mean the recipient did not get a PM notification in the SB, which would be taking away a feature.

Make the shoutbox show certain 'things' to only certain 'users'.

For example, the pm notification in shoutbox functionality.

If I send a pm. It should only show up in that users shoutbox. Not in mine. And vice versa.

If I disable pm notification. Then it should hide it in both shoutbox and shoutbox archive for my viewing.

If I have pm notification disabled, it should not still count pm's I send in the forums as a shoutbox count.

Might not be easy, but i'm sure it is doable and would improve the functionality a lot.

Doing what you ask in an efficient way is, as far as we've been able to find, impossible. =(

We don't deliberately make things work in ways that can potentially be awkward - if they are like that its usually because there aren't any alternatives (or at least none that wouldn't severely impact on server load)

Deliberate - no. Id never think that. But I do believe there has to be a way lol. Of course I'm no coder just an optimist lol.

Question: I have pm's disabled. Why is it that they are disabled in the shoutbox and not in the archive? If they can be hidden in shoutbox for my view, logically they would be for the archive too.

Because the setting was only designed to hide it from the immediate view, i.e. the shoutbox. When users go to the Archive, it's assumed they want to see more information (sans ignore lists of course) :)
