3rd result on Google for "how to increase max_allowed_packet": How to Increase max_allowed_packets in MySQL - Forums - Liferay.com :)

If you cannot perform the steps described in that thread, contact your web host and tell them to do it :)

We use 128M as the value here on DBTech, no issues :)

Please note that shared hosts may be reluctant to change this, so if your host is unwilling to change it you will need to switch web hosts.

PS: This is not a problem unique to DBTech mods or indeed any other vBulletin modification. You will find you are going to run into this issue if you attempt to install one or more other products from other vendors (so long as they add more phrases).

I logged into mysql and executed show variables like 'max_allowed_packet';

max_allowed_packet 1048576

Now the thread you mention reads quite well yet this line:
To get around this, you need to increase MySQL's max_allowed_packet variable. Edit the .ini or .cnf (depends on the setup you have) file that is read by mySQL.
does not tell you where to find this .ini or .cnf.

Any help on that? Ive looked through my file listing and see neither! DirectAdmin sucks..
