I think I've finally taught myself how to use this in the absence of *any* user documentation. 
However I may not understand the Code criteria properly. My interpretation of it is that I can give the code I see in the invite section of my settings to someone and they can follow that link to get to a specific registration instance with custom profile fields which can then put them into a specific usergroup after they fill things in.
When I test with my codes, I just get the login screen saying you need to register before loading the registration screen......
