Coming up this Wednesday I have the busiest day of the year for my forum. Last year we had over 1,900 users online at once. In a nut shell I want to reduce the impact on my SQL server but don't want to kill my php server either. (they run on the same box) Would using a chat mod like vbshout be a benefit to me? For what its worth I currently do the following for optimization. APC, memcache, nginx/apache, vb optimise pro, and maxcdn.

I'm not entirely sure I understand your question. A mod like vBShout wouldn't help reduce the load on your server, quite the contrary. 1900 users loading a shoutbox would increase server load.

How would it compare to 1900 users posting in a thread within a 2 second period vs 1900 users posting in a chat box in a 2 second period.

I have absolutely no idea, sorry :(
I would imagine it would be worse, due to the AJAX nature of loading that much content.

The shoutbox wasn't really designed to replace posting in threads.
