I'm not sure what the best solution for this is....and I know you aren't designing the chat to work with mobile devices. I personally use an iphone and the chat works great on it. However, the one issue is being able to double click a chat to edit or delete it. On iOS the double tap causes the page to zoom out rather than have a double click effect. I'm thinking if you add to the member name drop down an option to edit and/or delete that would give a potential solution to this shortfall with iOS.
BTW- I have customized my drop down menu. Screen shot attached. I think this layout makes the most sense as it puts the chat @ someone right on top and the private chat option right below it. It also has the X to close the menu right at the top where people are expecting to see it. I also created a custom phrase for private chat to separate it from the phrase private message because it was confusing since that was already used for forum private messages (which I also created a new menu item for that as well). Just pointing all this out...cause if you like it feel free to rearrange vbshout. (Saves me customizing during each upgrade.
