Is it possible to use a custom item field in a template as a variable?

After creating a new item using the "Custom Item" option. Can one of the custom fields for the item be used as a variable in a template, "postbit_legacy" in this case.

In that case, is there a variable or condition for if they have purchased the item?

To check if someone had bought a particular item you'd need a kind of PHP processing that isn't available to templates, so it's something I'd need to specifically code support for
