When you are viewing a download, on the top left, underneath the no image icon, there should be a link that says Add Thumbnail/Screenshot.

Screenshot worked fine, but thumbnail didn't work, i tried a .png format. does it have to be a specific format and size for thumnail icon?

It should take the same as the screenshots. I tried with a fairly large png and it worked for me on my dev system. You used the thumbnail upload part and not the screenshot part right?
