I was just wondering if this mod would be of any benefit to me for my forum. By "benefit" I mean is it likely to reduce the load on server resources.

My forum is a relatively small one by many standards, generally only 50 to 150 people on it at any one time. At least half of those are visitors who can read only. Of the members most spend their time reading and not a great deal of time posting.

So, is this going to help with forum load in my case?

I doubt it's going to help with server load, if I'm honest.

The purpose of the mod is to make multiple people viewing the same thread able to communicate quicker, by not forcing a page reload to check for new posts. For that reason, it tends to lend itself better to sites that cover topics that have live events (such as sports).
