@Fillip H. thank you for that! follow up question, can I include the code from the default template that inserts the latest posts in my html custom template? I'd like to send out a custom email template that includes that information. thanks!

Unfortunately not, though the automated digest does contain that information. It's not possible to include that information in the manual newsletter, however.
