Legacy Image Preview Suggestion

I am testing the image preview and to be honest it is not very appealing. It takes you to a blank white page with the image in top left corner.

Is it possible to use vbulletin's lightbox or some other more appealing way of displaying the image?

The functionality is not designed to be an image preview, as it's possible to use any kind of link as the preview. If you are only ever going to use images for the preview, and you want to display them in-line, you can edit the prize display template and change the link text from [Preview] (phrased) to an <img /> tag.
