Question How do I make some categories read only or archived

As some of our categories are dated, it makes sense to set the older month categories
to read only or to keep them from being listed as an uploadable section in the dropdown
chooser. How can I make some categories read only?

You can try removing upload permissions for all usergroups to that category

Hmm, I haven't been able to find settings for that. In the category editor the only
permissions seems to be "Can View Category". I could not find any controls that
would allow me to control uploads to categories. That would certainly be a viable
solution though What am I missing?

Ah, it seems like this can only be done per instance, not per category. You would need to create a new Gallery Instance for these categories and set the permissions as appropriate for that instance alone.
