I guess I am a bit confused on how criteria works, i somewhat understand it, but I was wondering if there was a explanation of the achievements and criteria that can be setup?

Criteria are what power Achievements and Promotions.
If you want to make, say, an achievement for having reached 1,000 posts, you would create a Criteria that has Posts, >= and 1000 in their respective fields. You then go to the achievement management screen, select your newly created Criteria, and you're all set
