I have a group that the the group owner has not returned to the site in awhile. Many people are trying to get into the group but can't.

In the settings I see:

After social group(s) have been transferred, either via user deletion or via the "Batch user update" feature in XenForo, a new discussion thread can be started in a specified forum asking users for any volunteers to take over ownership.

From that I take it that a site admin needs to transfer group ownership to a new owner, then a thread is created asking for somebody to be owner?

Is there a way for the current group users to kick off this thread/discussion and handle it themselves?

That thread is created in the chosen forum (not inside a social group) in one of two cases:
1. The group owner's user account gets deleted
2. An admin uses the "Bulk update users" feature in XenForo to bulk transfer the affected users' groups to the "Group takeover" default recipient user

No, the system does not support mutinous behaviour But seriously though, I understand the desire for an automated solution to handle inactive group owners, but for now this is not possible.

Furthermore, there is no "election" system in the discussion thread, it's also up to the admin to transfer the group to whoever seems like the best candidate.
