Pending Downloadable versions assigned at category level?

Let's say you sell something like Xenforo Addons, where in their category they tend to all share the same downloadable versions:

I wonder if it'd be a good idea to allow category-level assigned values, much like category-level prefixes? For example right now if you sell 50-60 addons, everytime Xenforo releases a new version you'd have to assign that new download version to every single product.

Not sure if it would be a good idea though - leaving to developer's wisdom on this. Perhaps it'd make it messier as products that don't have (or need) updates would be listing out irrelevant blank downloadable versions on the front-end, etc.

The first counter-point is that there's usually no need to add every single XF minor version. Addons usually work across multiple versions.

Also, prefixes aren't category-level. Which prefixes are available is category-level, but you still have to assign each prefix to each product.

The most important counter-point is that at this point, product versions being per-product is too ingrained in the system to remove it without serious risk of regression bugs.

That being said, there is some value in having a way to quickly add a new product version to all products within a category. For that reason, I'll keep this on hold

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for the explanation! It'd always be great to have ways to automate or speed up administration tasks, perhaps there may be another idea that would make better sense as to the operation of your plugin.
