Any issues to know about upgrading from 1.1.4 to the latest version?

I don't believe there are any issues, but I'd recommend testing it on a staging server just to be safe

Is there a "safer path" to upgrading, like an intermediate release or two which would be better than going from 1.1.4 to 2.0?
