no thank you, you've been a great help, I should be able to fix it now because I knew where to search https://my.hostmonster.com/cgi/help/123
next time you get a 500 error maybe you can just refer them there

So... simple perms issue
can you tell me what files need to have write access?

Depends on what you mean by write access - potentially all vBShout files may make a write operation.

should I just go through and give write access to everything in the upload folder?
by which I mean 0777 perms

woah, going through the perms, all the uploaded files had severly reduced perms (644 compared with the standard 755)
the missing execute perms are probably what caused all my problems

Fixing perms from 644 to 755 worked for me, next time you have error 500 it's probably a permission error

Would only be a permission error by your hosting.Would never happen on a vps/dedi server as perms are open..

if theres one thing I wish someone had told me before I got into the forum buisness it would be not to use shared hosting, or at least to find out how many database connections you can have (Hostmonsters sales pitch said NOTHING about limiting your MySQL connections, couldn't find it detailed anywhere on the site, only found out I was limited by talking to their tech support people and even that took more time then it should have)
