I was looking for a way to keep up with mailing list and found this add-on/plugin. I wanted to give the Lite version a trial run first to make sure it all works like I need it to. I downloaded it and have a few questions and an issue I would like to work out before proceeding to purchase. I prefer the Pro version because I would like the ability to save templates.

1. Does this handle HTML coding in the editor? I tried the HTML code we have been using for our newsletters and it did not format it properly when it came through on my email. It looks like it tries to handle HTML, but something happened somewhere in the formatting/sending that broke it up. The coding we have been using was professional created by an HTML developer so that it would work with several email clients, thus we are pretty sure it has nothing to do with the HTML code.

2. When this product is enabled, the Private Messaging system cannot be accessed and all members get an error: Fatal error: Call to undefined method vB_Template::fetch_css_path() in /home/homethea/public_html/forums/global.php(607) : eval()'d code on line 370

I look forward to your reply.

Would you be able to offer more details?
You could try removing the whitespace in the HTML code, i.e. transform
Code:
<html>
<head>
stuff
</head>
<body>
stuff
</body>
</html>
into
Code:
<html><head>stuff</head><body>stuff</body></html>
and see if that helps.

2. When this product is enabled, the Private Messaging system cannot be accessed and all members get an error: Fatal error: Call to undefined method vB_Template::fetch_css_path() in /home/homethea/public_html/forums/global.php(607) : eval()'d code on line 370
That is a bug in another product you have installed. This other product uses an invalid method of checking for vB3/vB4 differences.

The correct way of checking is
PHP:
if (intval($vbulletin->versionnumber) == 4)
for vB4, whereas they use
PHP:
if (class_exists('vB_Template'))
or something similar.

This conflicts with our mod, and it will conflict with literally every other DBTech mod produced that's also available for vB3, as well as multiple other non-DBTech mods that use a similar method of making vB3 & vB4 co-development easier.

Thanks for the quick reply Fillip.

We could probably remove white space, but then it would be horrible to try to update each month... trying to figure out where various items are when it the code rambles on and on like that.

Is there any hope to get a preview of the HTML it in the Pro version? The only way to preview it now is to send a test by email and look at it, which we would do anyway, but we would not want to have to do that over and over to get it all prepared.

For the error... anyway for me to figure out what other plugin could be causing the conflict? We don't currently have any other conflicts, obviously.

Regards,
Sonnie

There is no Preview functionality at this time, and I'm not sure if such a function would be able to accurately replicate the view users would be presented with in the email client.

Could you attach the HTML code to a post here, so that I can see if there's any changes I can make to the code to improve the display?

As for the conflict, the best I can do is determine that it's a plugin running on the parse_templates hook location. You can then look for references to vB_Template and/or fetch_css_path inside that plugin in order to determine the faulty plugin. Once you've determined the faulty plugin, please post it here inside either PHP or CODE tags and I'll send you back a fixed version you can use on your site :)

We could always do our HTML coding on the site first and then copy and paste it to the editor once we get it like we want it. We post it here: HomeTheaterShack - Home Theater Forums - HTS Newsletter ... which is where you can see what it should look like.

It is just a little more aggravating, but it would not be all that bad I suppose.

I will see if I can find the plugin that is causing the issue.

Here is he code for the newsletter (I had to leave off part of it because of the 50,000 character limit):

Yeah... I had already stuck that back in there and enabled vBMail and it is all good. Thanks!

Now if we can get the HTML code to work like we want it, we should be in business.

Something else that I am a little concerned about is the ability to subscribe or unsubscribe (opt-out) during registration.

There needs to be something in the UserCP for subscription management. It does not make sense to have two different places to manage mail you receive from the forum. It should all be together in one place.

I also don't really understand the keyword subscription. I suppose if we are only going to be sending out a newsletter, it really won't apply to us. Either way, it doesn't make a lot of sense. I looked at what you have and it just looks like a lot for any user to have to figure out. It does not seem like it is serving any real purpose here.

BTW... wonderous should be wondrous.

Another issue I am running into... I have a particular mailing list set to where only Administrators can view it... actually Administrators is the only usergroup checked for anything to do with it. However, as a regular user, I can click on mailing list in the Quick Link menu and see that mailing list. I should not be able to see it.

Thanks,
Sonnie

This already exists - if they elect to not receive emails from administrators (a built-in vB feature) then they will also not receive emails from the mailing list regardless of their subscription status.

The feature exists so that you can target each email in your mailing list to specific users, and allow users to fine-tune their preferences so that they only receive emails concerning topics they're interested in.

For instance, if your forum is a gaming forum and this week only contains Xbox news, having Xbox and PlayStation keywords set up means that the people who are not interested in Xbox news but are interested in PlayStation news can "unsubscribe" from

Try ticking the "Cannot View List" box and see if that helps - it shouldn't be required, but try it nonetheless to check :)

The Cannot View List worked... thanks!

A few things:

1. Can we get a Select/Deselect All for the Mailing List Permissions selections in each column?

2. Anyway to add a search for user on a particular list in case they refuse to use the Unsubscribe link themselves and ask us to unsubscribe them from a particular list? I have 4,000 pages listing subscribed users. Can you imagine going through all those pages to get to the someone in the middle of the pack? Hopefully they will say "unsubscribe me from all emails" and we can just turn off email from Admin and that will unsubscribe them from all of them... assuming this is how it works?

3. I still think it would be good to have the Mailing List show up within the User Control Panel where all the other user, details, mail and subscription options are located. It is after all part of the user controls.

4. Have you been able to figure out why the HTML is breaking? It does not break with other programs, so I am assuming there is a way to stop it withing the plugin coding.

The first 3 above are not critical, but obviously #4 is.

For the first 3, would you be able to create them as Feature Request threads in the vBMail forum? We can't take suggestions from this forum into consideration, as they won't be logged in our system.

I haven't had a chance to test the HTML yet, as I'm currently preparing for Monday's releases. If I finish up early tomorrow or Monday, I'll be able to look at it then :)

Absolutely... I will go post them now.

Thanks!

We have a little time before we will actually use it. We are trying to find a good WYSIWYG HTML editor that will allow image uploads that we can use on one of our forum pages to produce our newsletter online.

Checking to see if you have had a chance to check/test the HTML coding that I sent you.

Also... after banning a member, it does not appear to take them off the subscribed list. Since banned members are not on the subscribe list, does it automatically kick them out of the next emailing?

Thanks!

It is strange that it does not break in any other email program I use.

<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000">It
has truly been a remarkable year at Home Theater Shack. For the first
time in our eighth year of existence we covered several nice audiofest
events, including Axpona, Lone Star Audio Fest, Capital Audiofest and
the big one, Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. I was even able to attend three
of these events myself. We met a lot of folks and covered a lot of rooms
with some outstanding coverage from our staff. We have been told that
it is the best coverage of any publication… and I agree. In most
publications you get a few video interviews or simply a few lines of
what equipment is in a few of the rooms, along with a photo or two.
Occasionally you might get a short listening impression comment. With
us, you get equipment lists, pricing, several photos and fairly detailed
listening impressions, and in some cases from more than one staff
member… and we cover more rooms. This is coverage you just don’t find in
other publications. <br />
<br />
We also had our first two speaker evaluation events with phenomenal
results and excellent reviews for our readers. These included speakers
costing approximately $1,000 or less in one event and speakers between
$2,000 and $2,500 in another event. These speaker reviews include
measurements, best placement recommendations and detailed impressions
from four different panelists attending the events. Lord willing, look
for another speaker evaluation event after the first of the year. We
have already started nominating speakers to vote on for the evaluation.</span></p>

<br />
We had some awesome giveaways this year too… and more are on the way.
Members constantly ask us how we do it. We believe in sharing with our
members who help us create content and grow our forum, which makes it
more informative for our readers. We work closely with our sponsors so
that we can bring you these giveaways… and in some cases we actually
trade out extra sponsor ads for products. We are offered the ability to
keep review products from time to time and we opt to give these away on
many occasions. Of course on a few occasions we give away cash! We want
to do whatever we have to do in order to give back to our community. <br />
<br />
We also signed up several new sponsors this year because they see great
value in our forum. From December of 2012 until now, Madisound, Audio
General, Take Five Audio, Underwood HiFi, XTZ Sound, Chane Music &
Cinema, audioxpress, Aperion Audio, Onkyo and Angel City Audio have all
come on board as new sponsors. We also appreciate our long time
sponsors who continue to support our forum and offer great products and
deals to our members. <br />
<br />
No doubt… what an absolutely great year. However, it is not a great
year without our great members who enable us to do what we do. We
appreciate every member and thank you all for participating in the
forum. It is wonderful to have such a pleasant and mature forum of
members without a bunch of nonsense. At Home Theater Shack, we can truly
say that we are blessed beyond what we deserve. <br />
<br /> From all of the staff at Home Theater Shack… <br />
<br /> Happy Holidays to everyone! </span></p></td></tr>

Look no further! Room EQ Wizard (REW) is a Java application for
measuring room acoustics and analyzing room and loudspeaker responses...
and it is FREE. It includes tools for generating test signals;
measuring SPL and impedance; measuring frequency and impulse responses;
generating phase, group delay and spectral decay plots, waterfalls,
spectrograms and energy-time curves; generating real time analyzer (RTA)
plots; calculating reverberation times; calculating Thiele-Small
parameters; determining the frequencies and decay times of modal
resonances; displaying equalizer responses and automatically adjusting
the settings of parametric equalizers to counter the effects of room
modes and adjust responses to match a target curve. And we have the help
you need to learn about it.</span></span></p>

Sorry, I've not had a chance to look into this any further due to other commitments.

Banning a member does not automatically unsubscribe them, no. The "default subscribed" list is just a list of usergroups that are subscribed by default - users are free to unsubscribe or subscribe after that.

So what you are telling me is that in order to keep a banned member from getting vBMail, I must manually go into the Subscribed user list and click through my 3,952 pages of subscribed users and delete each member that in banned after vBMail is installed? Seriously?

Okay... I just tested it by adding a user to our vBMail Test List, which they then showed on the list as subscribed, then banned them, and they were automatically removed from that subscribed list. So it does automatically Unsubscribe them. I even tested it by sending out email, which made it through before I banned them... and did not make it after I banned them. Whew! I thought we were about to have a whoa nellie there.

If we can just figure out why your program adds all the extra white space, we would be all set.

Had one of our tech guys figure out the extra white spacing... it was a parsing issue and a pretty easy fix.
