FYI, Page speed vs CPU load do not necessarily go hand in hand.
Tested it extensively on local server while beta testing vB5 betas and vB4 and can say it mod_pagespeed works and gives 2x times better page loading performance BUT mod_pagepage speed required 3x times cpu resources to achieve that...
Thanks for the update, unfortunately i'm no coder.
But it has been done before i know of at least 3 vb customers who have hacked their vB to offload sessions to memcached. But I'm not privy to the details so probably they did do all those massive file edits you mentioned.

Did you actually make sure you enabled vB datastore memcaching in the first place by uncommenting memcached settings ?
