notifications will popup for enough time for the user to see, and hope you add a counter to appear with page title if there's new notifications like FB.
I can see that people rush to FB because of the instant notification system. if you added this to vBulletin, they will stick to the forum.

If this is possible to achieve, especially with ability that we have links to actual threads/posts it would be really useful.

Yes, opening in another tab or window is something I always like to use for things like this. Having option for users to choose themselves what they prefer would be very welcome too.

I also have a method of allowing notifications to be opened in a new tab. That'll be in for beta release I hope! Please report anything you notice out of place!
