What are the SEO effects of forum tabs?

I tried out a different tab mod at one point, but had to remove it because the AJAX tabs meant that search engine spiders could not reach the forum content. Traffic plummeted.

I see this one is AJAX, too? Does it suffer from the same issue, or can spiders access threads etc. OK?

Thanks!

Had a think about this question before I answered.

DFT works in that it will automatically default to a specific tab when a user arrives for the first visit. This can be set to the 'All' tab (which is a Tab that contains a full list of all the forums). In theory that should mean that a 'guest' or spider would see that on their first visit. Whether the spider is capable and would change tabs I don't know. If it can you would expect it to consistently work it's way through each tab and the links, but as I said, I'm not sure if that is the case or not.

The mod is designed to work with the standard SEO features of vB. There is also a setting that allows for choosing what type of AJAX load is used. One loads the whole page in the background before pulling the data of the forums, the other just runs the checks on what forums should be visible. This setting allows third party plugins that use hooks that aren't loaded using the lighter quick AJAX load to still function when using the more comprehensive AJAX loading technique.

There are certainly things that I want to revisit to improve some aspects of SEO in v2 of Forum Tabs. For example, the current links that switch between tabs we could design to include a more details SEO URL (such as including the Tab title in the URL) which may further improve the whole SEO ability of the mod.

I would be very interested if you choose to install DFT to see how you get on and get your feedback and suggestions.

I hope this helps with your question. :)

Heh. Unfortunately, this is my source of income. Maybe some other folks have tried it out and can offer some insight?
