Question Question about file location after import

I have a question about file locations after import.

For example we are currently using vbgallery which is no longer supported and it seems that PhotoPost that they wanted us to switch to may also be no longer supported. Currently in vbgallery when a member uploads a photo it gets stored like this:

http://www.planet-9.com/gallery/files/3/1/4/2/9/img_7575.jpg

where the folder path in this case /3/1/4/2/9 represents user 31,429 to register on our forum.

I'm certain that there are countless forum posts and articles and quite possibly external links which all point to specific file locations for photos like the one I posted above.

When DBGallery imports images from VBGallery, does it actually copy/move physical files, or does it leave the files in their current locations and simply update pointers in a DBGallery table to point to their existing locations? I would hope it would be the 2nd of those 2 options as then none of the links to photos would be broken.

Of course the next question is what about categories, for example all categories in vbgallery are handled by browseimages.php and simply have a ?c=xx after them for the number of the category. If someone previously posted in my forums, hey check out my photos in my category here and posted a link to their category such as Cayman Images - Photo Gallery @ Planet-9 Porsche Forum what would that become in DBGallery or would DBGallery have some way of interpreting that link request and sending the person to the right category after import or would any such links simply be broken?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

The files are copied to the DB Gallery directory upon import, and there is no way to automatically redirect PP Gallery links to DB Gallery at this time.

While I understand your answer, why one earth would people do this? I've got 10 years of built up photo links to files in their existing locations. Migrating over to your gallery would break all of those links wouldn't it? I suppose technically if those photos stayed in their original physical locations then even if I shut down photopost they would still be there so an external link would still pull up the photo if your gallery merely COPIED (not moved) photos to a new location. Of course if I have 4GB of photos, now I'm going to have duplicates and be chewing up 8GB of space, but I could probably live with that. The links that would break would be if someone linked to a particular photopost / vbgallery location and not a specific photo, those links would have to be manually changed to point to the same category in the DB Gallery.

Which begs a follow up question, does DB Gallery copy and set up all the same categories that I have in VBGallery during the import? Or am I left with 4GB of and thousands of photos that I would have to manually sort and place into categories after the import? I'm hoping you are going to say that the category structure can be imported/duplicated and photos wind up in the proper categories post import.

Looking forward to your answers!

They do get copied, not moved.

It does indeed :)
