Hey Ozzy.
I am playing around with this on my test board and have a couple of questions;
Does the fees from paypal get accounted for in the listed donation amounts? Is there any record of the fees in the donation mod?
When manually entering a donation there is no where to enter this, is this possible in the future? (More of a feature request)

Yeah, it would be cool if the fees from paypal got accounted for in the listed donation amounts. I am guessing that it would vary depending on how few factors like exchange rate, mmm.... what do you call it? .... if it was set up as personal, gift etc. If the payee indicated they would pay the fee ( Yes or No) I think it's usually around .25 cents but I guess that could vary too? He say's scratching his head. :)

The fees do get counted as part of the users contribution, if they are done by the user through PayPal. If you enter the contribution manually you should enter the net amount, ie:$5, if a user contributed $5 enter it like that, don't enter the net amount from PayPal ie: $4.75

Their is no way as of now to see the fee amount that was deducted from the gross contribution amount at this time, other than from the email you get from PayPal or by looking at your account on PayPal and seeing the net amount.

Thanks Ozzy.
I have been using AWCoding Donation mod for the last couple of years and it shows the fees in the admincp for each transaction and also allows you the choice to display a gross (before fees) amount or net (after fees) amount.

It is not a deal breaker but it is just that I am so used to having that information. :)

If I remember awcodings donation system also carried a few more payment options as in Moneybookers and so forth..But also carried a backend that was full of api's and no longer supported.Personally I'd like vbdonate kept as it is..Then any problems are down to paypal..It will always cost for transactions. I'd be pretty annoyed if I'd donated $10 to a site only to be shown a donation fee less transfer fees..lol..
GoodApples..I asked the question? about setting it up as a gift in a previous thread..Suppose it's up to your member which way they choose, but I'd know who would be paying the fee If I was donating..

Yeah to me the info of a net donation amount is un necessary, the user is not responsible of you having to pay fees, same thing like sales tax, it is not reflected in the price of something, it is added on afterwards, same thing as a user sending you money, it is taken off the amount sent to you, not added to the amount the user is sending.

My purpose of the question was for me as a site owner and not for the members who donate. (that being said, everyone who uses paypal knows there is a fee).
For accounting purposes the net amount is necessary, it is nice to have that information available in one place rather than going to another site.

Anyway not a big deal, just thought I would throw that out there as a feature request. :)

Ahh ok if it is for accounting purposes, I can see how to get the net amount from paypal, and store that somewhere, but are you sure you only have to pay on the net amount and not on the gross? Just like getting a paycheck from work, you pay taxes on the gross amount, minus any savings ira's and such, but you end up paying on that when you withdraw it.

Maybe Cosmic would know as I am sure him and the accountant have dealt with this before in some sort of manner.

Yes, I agree only for the site owner to view as the member do not need to know that kind of info. (Accounting) :)

The fee that paypal charges is an expense no matter which way you slice it. :)

Right, but you still really received $5.00 from a user, it don't matter if you only netted $4.30 I think you still have to pay taxes on the $5.00 as the fee is just a part of doing business.

Would be the same thing if you have your paycheck deposited in a bank, and every time you deposited, the bank took out 2% you don't report to the IRS that I got what was deposited in my account, you pay taxes on what you were paid.

I could be wrong though wouldn't be the first time. :p

Every country, and state or province within that country has their own laws as to what is taxable and claimable. If it is a "donation" or contribution it may not be taxable at all. But the fee is still an expense.

Sorry for getting this really off topic but it is really is just a matter of having easy access to the information and then the site owner can account for it as needed. :)

I can see your point, but if you need to show your expences which include paypal transactions would you not be better getting the information from the Company thats charging the fee..In this case paypal..Having that info at hand on your site really serves no purpose, as you'll still pay a visit to paypal to see if the transaction as been completed..

This has now been added in v1.3.0 and is a pro only option.

When manually entering a donation, it will automatically calculate the fees for you.
