I'm thinking about this also for security purpose... (not sure for how far this is possible...)

Having the ability to have a different name to show up instead of your login-name...

For example,
Loginname: KarelL
But people will see my nickname: Valcav
And when people go to my profile, http:/website.com/member.php?1750-valcav/ or http://www.dragonbyte-tech.com/members/1750-valcav/

=> people who want to login as me will need to know that the loginname = KarelL and not Valcav...

I've seen this on other kind of boards... so I think it should be possible (and actually should have been standard integrated in vB...)
Friendly greetings,
Valcav

I just found that this is kind of being requested on vB: Login Required - vBulletin JIRA .
It is flagged as: Priority: Major .

Maybe I should not ask this here,
but I think this would be a very great improvement for vB...
I would ask each vb-license holder to Vote for it.
So that this would be integrated asap... the more votes an issue has, the higher the priority will be for vB to fix/include it...

As I said in my previous post, this would be huge security improvement...

My apologies if I break any rules with this post...

Friendly greetings,
Valcav

It's actually something i've wanted to do for the longest time as well, Fillip H. has had a look into it once or twice but both times it's just come up as not really being possible - perhaps because I ask that both the user/login name could be used for most functions. Just a masked login name might be possible though, i'll let him answer that.

Im not 100% sure, but a masked login name would mean vB was looking for the wrong user when PMing and such.

Unfortunately I think this is someting that needs to be built into the core software to properly work.

That's why I kind of replied to my first post with:

On the vBulletin JIRA (tracker): Add Alias name field (name displayed in all public areas, instead of displaying the same name used for log in)

I'm sorry to reply on this old post... (sorry if I violate any DBT rules for this)

Just want to add that this has been asked again on the vBulletin JIRA (tracker), this time for on vB5: Display Name
I would (if it wouldn't violate any DBT rules) ask to vote for that, but not sure if that would help a lot thou...
