For customers who have bought the vBulletin version of a product and the product becomes available in XenForo.

What will happen to our product lifetime license under vBulletin? Are they strictly ment for vBulletin or can the license be for XenForo as well?

Will the product download be offered for both vBulletin and XenForo or do current customers have to purchase a seperate license?

There is no new site, it would be the same site and same license, but not of vBulletin.

I ask, because I am purchasing XenForo and would like to transfer any current vBulletin product specific license to a XenForo product license.

Forumon RPG would be a huge decision for me to convert from vBulletin to XenForo.

There will be a "switching" service to transfer licenses between vbulletin and Xenforo. There will likely be a nominal fee (of $5 or so) to do so, to cover the increase in support time the new platform will bring due to long term customers likely needing more support time with the version on an unfamiliar system.

Not set in stone though, so feel free to leave some feedback and let me know what you think of the plans =)

I would like it if current customers could update their license preference, but a "nominal fee" is not appealing.

The problem with doing it for free is the significant increase in support volume which would be caused. The original price takes into account the likely amount of support required during set up and such - essentially this would be doubled if we allowed free switching between the two platforms, and so we would be forced to increase all of our prices for all of our mods to combat this.

The feeling within DBTech is that a small fee would be a very reasonable thing (Try exchanging an Xbox 360 game for a PS3 one for instance =P, or more aptly - a PC game for a MAC game when just because you bought a new laptop :p), but it is likely we will have some sort of offer when we launch our XF site allowing people to switch for free for a limited period of time ^.^

In short if we didn't have a fee, it would mean that development of modifications and support quality would suffer, since the load would increase without any funds to pay for the extra time required. We don't think that would be fair to our customers who aren't switching who paid the same as those who are.

We will have a poll on it closer to the time though and get everyones opinions - those switching and those staying. In the end what our customers want is what we will go with.
